Earlier this week, legendary and controversial basketball coach Bob Knight passed away.
Remembered for his national championship-winning Indiana Hoosiers teams as well as the myriad accusations of verbal and physical abuse he lobbed at his players, Knight leaves behind a complicated legacy for sports fans to parse out.
One person who has nothing but kind words to say for the coaching legend is former U.S. President Donald Trump.
“The World just lost an incredible person, the Great Bobby Knight. He was not just an award-winning and record-breaking Coach, he was loyal to his Players, to his State, and to our Country—Tough as nails, but a big heart,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
Like with most things involving Trump, his appreciation for Knight is rooted in the fact that Knight supported him during his initial campaign to become President.
“When he Endorsed me, it was like the whole Great World of Indiana opened up happy and wide,” wrote Trump. “Our hearts and prayers are with his wonderful wife Karen and Sons, Tim and Pat—Their Father was a great man!”
Knight won three national titles and made five Final Fours during his 29-season tenure at Indiana. In total, he won 902 games at Army, Indiana, and Texas Tech.
