James Franklin Penn State football head coach James Franklin listens to a question from a member of the media during football media day at Beaver Stadium on Sunday, August 6, 2023, in State College.

Heading into the 2023 college football season, the Penn State Nittany Lions faced a preseason quarterback battle between Drew Allar or Beau Pribula. While Allar ultimately won the job and has yet to throw a single interception through seven games this season, it sounds like there’s a plan to plan Pribula as well throughout the rest of the season.

During his recent press conference this week, Penn State head coach James Franklin made it clear that there could be a role for Beau Pribula in the offense and is even considering packages with him on the field at the same time as Drew Allar.

“There’s been some plans for us each week to try to get both Beau and Drew on the field at the same time, which I think could cause some conflicts and cause some challenges,” Franklin said this week according to On3. “If you just put Beau on the field by himself, people defend you differently. But with those two guys on the field at the same time, I think that can cause some issues.”

Pribula is more of a dual-threat runner while Allar is a pure pocket passer, offering a change of pace for the Penn State offense with 225 rushing yards and three touchdowns so far this season. And Franklin acknowledges what that dual-threat ability brings to the offense.

“We’ve been very pleased with Beau, and Beau’s done a nice job,” Franklin said. “We had some plans to use him last week, as well. I think so far this season, he’s been able to get into the game, play really well, run the offense. We’re not really changing the scheme. We’re just kind of emphasizing things that make sense for him and his style.”

It will be interesting to see what his role will be going forward.
