The Denver Broncos are paying new head coach Sean Payton around $18 million a year to coach their football team, and during Thursday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs, he made a mistake that you would never expect from such a highly-paid head coach – he forgot what down it was.

The mistake came late in the second quarter when the Denver Broncos had the ball on fourth down with just 22 seconds left on the clock. Puzzlingly, Payton decided to call a time-out between third and fourth down, and the reason was because he thought it was third down and wanted to set up a play for his team.

“That’s a boneheaded mistake by me. They were calling one as well and I’m off by a down, but that was stupid,” Payton said.

Instead, the Broncos essentially gave the Chiefs an extra timeout, which helped them as they quickly drove down the field and set up a 60-yard field goal by star kicker Harrison Butker.

It was a pretty brutal mistake from the second highest-paid head coach in the league, and the NFL world was quick to blast him for it on social media.

It’s certainly been a pretty rough start to his Broncos coaching career.
