Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots are the subject of another bizarre investigation. WTHR-TV’s Bob Kravitz first reported the news that the AFC champion may have used overly deflated footballs during their win on Sunday.
The league requires teams to inflate all footballs to certain specifications and after a football was removed from circulation during the game, the Patriots level of inflation is being called into question. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was told via NFL spokesman Michael Signora that the league is investigating whether or not the Patriots violated the rules. Although teams are routinely checked on the matter, it rarely leads to anything.
Football fans may remember USC receiving a fine for using deflated footballs during a game against Oregon in 2012. It is unclear what the penalty would be if the NFL finds New England violated the specifications, but would likely result in a hefty fine or potential suspensions.
