Former Detroit Red Wings prospect Johan Ryno is currently captaining Leksands IF in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) and he recently crafted an all-time blooper reel moment that he’d love to forget. Ryno had a late-game, empty-net breakaway against Brynäs IF to seal the victory for Leksands but – somehow, some way – he managed to screw it up.
After the puck bounced off the skate of a Brynäs player near the defensive zone blue line, Ryno gathered it in the neutral zone with nothing but open ice and an empty net in front of him. As the Swede skated into the offensive zone, he tripped over the blue line and nearly lost control of the puck before getting back on his feet and appearing to regain composure. Phew… close call, right?
Wrong.
Quickly after that recovery, Ryno managed to screw up once again, losing control of the puck as he attempted to cock back a shot a few feet from the open net. He didn’t get the opportunity to recover from that one; a Brynäs player was able to gain possession and take play the other way.
It was embarrassing, sure…but it could have been a lot worse. Despite a few nice scoring opportunities at the other end, Leksands was able to hold on for the one-goal win, bailing out their captain big time. But, unfortunately for Ryno, escaping with a win doesn’t mean he gets to escape YouTube infamy.
