In 2004, Peyton Manning not only won the MVP award for the second consecutive season, he won it while breaking the record for most touchdowns in a single season with 49 TDs which bested Dan Marino’s old mark of 48. He also set a then-record high passer rating (121.1). Most remarkably, Manning was able to do all of this while sitting out most of the final game of the regular season against the Denver Broncos. However, Manning’s historic season ended against the (who else) New England Patriots in the playoffs.
