With the Packers and Seahawks set to kick off the 2014 season on Thursday night, everyone remembers the day that was September 24, 2012, an ominous Monday night that will forever live in American lore. Wayne Elliott became the most famous replacement official in the history of sports and Packers safety M.D. Jennings was vaulted into an inescapable tunnel of agonizing notoriety.

The feeling was helpless. It was an overwhelming bewilderment of hopelessness, eliciting an unprecedented sense of panic across the beautifully whacky landscape of professional sports. The odd signal of touchdown and subsequent botched replay single-handedly ended the now-infamous referee lockout of 2012.
