Colin Kaepernick made waves on Wednesday when it was announced that he and the 49ers had agreed to a contract extension which will keep Kaepernick in San Francisco until 2020. The contract could be worth more than $110 million and pays $61 million in guaranteed money.

In what has become an annual tradition at this point, Kaepernick’s new extension sets a new record in terms of guaranteed money in an NFL contact.

Contracts for NFL quarterbacks are only going to go up from here. So, while Kaepernick certainly won big today, he’s also handed talented quarterbacks some critical leverage for when they come around to the negotiating table over the next couple of seasons.
