Adam Silver held the most important press conference of his young career as NBA Commissioner on Tuesday afternoon when he addressed the scandal surrounding Clipper’s owner Donald Sterling and the racist comments recorded in a conversation with his then-girlfriend.

Silver said he was “personally distraught” by Sterling’s offensive comments and and announced that Sterling would be banned from the NBA for life and fined $2.5 million dollars, the maximum amount allowed under the league’s constitution. Silver also said he will do “everything in his power” to force a sale of the Clippers, a process that will begin immediately.
