One of the big off-season acquisitions by the New Orleans Pelicans was All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday, whose skills were deemed to be of little no use to a tanking Philadelphia 76ers squad. Saturday night, Holiday’s Pelicans matched up with the Houston Rockets in the pre-season opener for both teams. Normally, such a matchup wouldn’t register a blip on most peoples’ radars, but Patrick Beverley apparently isn’t “most people”. The noted meniscus destroyer put on a defensive clinic early in the fourth quarter, swiping Holiday four times in the span of about three minutes, with a level of aggression commonly reserved for Game 7s — not meaningless pre-season affairs.
It was all poor Jrue could do to commit a desperation frustration foul and finally end the madness. Nevertheless, Jrue had better get used to it, because New Orleans and Houston are in the same division and play each other four times this season. Have fun with that. And good luck to Jrue’s meniscus!
