Miami-Heat-crowned-NBA-Champions-Silence-the-Thunder-121-106-in-Game-5-Part-2-164764Since 1985, the NBA has scheduled its Finals series in a 2-3-2 format, rather than the traditional 2-2-1-1-1 format of the conference playoffs. The NBA implemented the change to ease cross-country travel for teams and media, which, in the days before chartered team planes and other creature comforts, was an absolute necessity. However, times have changed, and the debate over the format has only become more heated (no pun intended) in recent years.

Apparently, the NBA’s competition committee agrees with the anti-2-3-2 crowd. The Boston Herald‘s Steve Pulpett is reporting that committee, which is comprised of a group of owners, general managers, coaches and one player, voted unanimously to return to the 2-2-1-1-1 format. The format change still has to be approved by the league’s 30 owners, but it is assumed that there will be little to no objection.
