Tom Brady is retired from the NFL and did not play anywhere last season, but he has notably kept his options open for a potential return this upcoming season, making it clear that he is staying in shape and he wouldn’t be opposed to joining a playoff-caliber team in need of a quarterback. It doesn’t sound like the Patriots are expecting him to return, but it also doesn’t sound like they’d turn him away, either.

During a recent interview, New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo was asked about the potential return of Tom Brady to the NFL. While he made it pretty clear that he does not expect Brady to come back to the Patriots, it sounds like he would let Brady compete if he wanted to.

“I love Tom, and the door is always open if he wants to come in here and coach,” Mayo said Monday morning on WEEI. “But as far as going on the field, I don’t know. But if he comes in here, once again, going back to the ‘hey, the best player will play,’ you’ve gotta come in here in compete, and he loves competition. I doubt he’s gonna be walking through these doors any time soon.”

Obviously, these comments led to a lot of reactions on social media.

It does not seem as though Brady is going to come out of retirement as he prepares to begin a broadcasting career with Fox, but it’s certainly notable that he hasn’t ruled it out.
