I’m not one to pass up an opportunity to talk about Shawn Kemp, aka My Favorite Athlete of All Time — especially when dunking is involved. Add in the word “contest” next to “dunking”, and you definitely have my attention. Unfortunately, Kemp is 43 years old now, and no longer getting up like this. Yet, he clearly still has an itch for participating in some way — unfortunately it’s in a more land-locked role as a dunk contest prop.
Kemp recently showed up at the AND1 Remix Dunk Contest in Philadelphia, and stood in as the 6-foot-10 roadblock between 5-foot-10 Haneef “Young Hollywood” Munir and the rim. If you saw Munir’s slam over Blake Griffin last month, it should come as no shock that he scaled Mt. Kemp as well. Alas, just as his prop never won a dunk contest (Kemp was robbed by Dee Brown in 1991, among other legitimate contest failures), Munir didn’t win this one, which means at least the Kemp Dunk Contest Curse is alive and well.
