It has been a rough 48 hours for Cam Newton. After capturing the NFL MVP award on Saturday night, the flashy Panthers quarterback played horrendously in their Super Bowl 50 loss on Sunday, walked out of his postgame press conference and now is trying to explain his performance and actions. And he’s only catching more heat.

Instead of simply admitting fault for not diving on his fourth-quarter fumble, Newton gave an odd explanation about how his leg was angled:

“I don’t dive on one fumble because the way my leg was — it could have been [contorted] in a way,” Newton told Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer. “OK, you say my effort. I didn’t dive down. I fumbled. That’s fine. But we didn’t lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that.”

His comments have been met with harsh criticism from everyone, including Warren Sapp, who mocked his reasoning on Twitter:

This surely isn’t the last of the Newton criticism. Get ready for an offseason of bashing on the MVP quarterback.
