It’s been 23 years since NBA Jam first hit arcades across the country and it remains one of the most popular and revered video games of all time. Developed by Midway in 1993, the game generated over $1 billion in revenue…just from quarters. In less than one year, it became the highest-earning arcade game of all time.

As graphics have transformed dramatically over the last two decades, gamers and basketball fans continue to flock to the fantastic one. But, according to lead designer Mark Turmell, NBA Jam almost never came to fruition. Check out this cool interview by Great Big Story:
