The ESPY awards chose to honor Caitlyn Jenner, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, with the Arthur Ashe Courage Award for recently coming out as transgender, over late teenage basketball player Lauren Hill, who battled an inoperable brain tumor to achieve her goal of playing college basketball while also raising money for cancer research. But after dodging media the past couple weeks, Jenner took the stage to receive her award, presented by another gold medalist in Abby Wambach.

Jenner had a lot to live up to as a recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Michael Sam, who gave last year’s speech as the first high-profile NFL prospect to come out as gay, delivered a heartfelt speech as did the honorees before him. She had the support of her entire family in the back too.
