Rex Ryan was officially fired by the New York Jets today in a move that wasn’t particularly shocking.

While it’s hard to fault Ryan for the Jets’ failures given that he’s a defensive coach who was saddled with a rather poor offense, the Jets haven’t had a winning season since 2010 and NFL head coaching tenures are not exactly known for their longevity. Everyone in the Jets organization likely knew that Monday would be Ryan’s last in the Jets facility.

Ryan made the most of his final goodbye.

According to the New York Daily News’ Manish Mehta, Ryan’s farewell to the Jets players was absolutely fantastic. He kept the focus of his goodbye on the players and how grateful he was to have known them. It’s hard to make a firing into a positive but Rex certainly left the Jets with his head held high.
