The Marshall Thundering Herd are one of four unbeatens in FBS college football, joining the likes of Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Florida State, but unlike that trio it appears they have no shot at the College Football Playoff. However, it doesn’t mean they won’t try everything to wiggle in.

Conference USA has hired public relations firm Brener, Zickel & Associates to help boost those slim chances and, with the approval of Marshall, they released the first piece of that campaign in the form of a basic statement. The statement makes a simple case for playoff consideration by highlighting their team statistics, individual statistics of dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate QB Rakeem Cato and even a brief history of the school’s football program.

Why does the Thundering Herd have no chance?  They have played seven games in 2014 and their opponents boast a combined record of 20-33 and the remaining five games are just as pitiful, with only UAB carrying a winning record at 4-3. While the attempt, commitment and creativity is commendable, and it could lead to other exposure benefits for both Marshall and Conference USA, it appears to be a lost cause.
