The U.S. Miracle…And Collapse

I hate to reopen recently healed wounds, but I promise this is the last time. For American fans, the memories of this World Cup will be bittersweet. The win over Ghana was magical (and lucky). The Portugal game saw the U.S. play one of its best games ever, but the result was contaminated by a U.S. collapse, allowing a tying goal with basically zero time left on the clock. A loss to Germany wasn’t fun, but the U.S. advanced to the next round.

And, losing to Belgium was expected, but, when Chris Wondolowski found himself alone in front of goal with no time remaining, we were allowed to believe in miracles, only to be crushed when the ball skied over the crossbar.
