The oldest known Babe Ruth player contract just sold for $1 million at auction in Baltimore over the weekend. The 1918 contract from the Boston Red Sox was one of over 30 Ruth-related items that were auctioned off at Sports Legends Museum on Saturday, one day after the 100th anniversary of Ruth’s major league debut.

The $1.02 million winning bid for the contract – which itself was for $5,000 over two seasons – marks the highest selling price ever for a player contract. It surpasses the contract that sent Ruth to the Yankees, which sold for $996,000 in 2005.
