The Red Sox found themselves down by a single run in the tenth inning of today’s game against the Minnesota Twins. With their backs up against the wall, David Ortiz and Mike Napoli changed all that with back-to-back home runs.
Perhaps it should be of no surprise that David Ortiz would be the guy to kick off the impromptu home run derby. Ortiz made his major league debut with the Twins and Big Papi seems to relish sticking it to his old team. Today was no exception:
With the score tied, Mike Napoli then stepped up to the plate. You can guess what happened when pitcher Casey Fein decided to serve Napoli a baseball right smack dab in the middle of the plate:
Talk about walking off in dramatic fashion.
According to Elias, which somehow keeps track of obscure stats like this, the Red Sox haven’t had a walk-off win due to back-to-back homers since 1999. That makes today’s victory a relatively rare event that will inevitably be forgotten in the long marathon that is the MLB regular season.
