Cal Ripken Jr. had the distinct honor of giving the 2013 commencement address at the University of Maryland this past week. We now have video of the speech, and not surprisingly it is as motivational as you would expect from one of the all-time MLB greats. Ripken was bestowed an honorary doctorate for his efforts.

Below is the entire transcript for the commencement address given by the Hall Of Famer:

Thank you, thank you. Just for the record, just because you stood up and clapped, I’m not taking a lap around the ball park again. Those days are over, thank you. In the beginning, I wasn’t sure what to expect from these bronze statue ceremonies. Sure these statues are for pretty good Orioles baseball players, but at the same time a familiar kind of Orioles magic started to appear, the magic of the Oriole Way. A deep-rooted connection developed over generations, made up of people who dedicated their lives to baseball in Baltimore. Sure, it’s a game, right? Well, not to this group. Baseball was, and is, about excellence on and off the field; baseball was, and is, about teamwork; baseball was, and is, about community. Baseball, in the end, was and is about family, one big family, the Oriole family.
Speaking of families, I want to thank the Angelos family for their renewed connection with the rich history of the Orioles. Thank you so much, Mr. Angelos, thank you so much, Mrs. Angelos, John and Lou for creating and capturing that spirit of the Oriole way through these wonderful works of art. Thank you very much. I am honored to look out and see myself among the players whose sculptures stand here. Through these statues, we all are reminded what it means to be an Oriole: local ownership, local pride, representing Baltimore and the State of Maryland in the best possible way for the rest of the country and the world. And, I might add, being an Oriole is also about playing meaningful games in September. Congratulations to Buck Showalter and his Oriole team for a great and exciting season, we are all behind you.
Thank you, Brady, for your kind words. Good stuff, especially given you only had 24 hours notice. Thank you to Toby Mendez, the sculptor; you really captured the essence of each person.
And thank you to my wonderful family- Kelly, Rachel and Ryan- for allowing me to pursue a dream. To share my career with them and now be a part of their young journey in life, there is no better gift.
Thank you to my mom, and my brothers and my sister- Ellen, Fred and Billy- who helped shape me into the person I am.
You know, a special thanks goes out to Wild Bill. No, not Wild Bill Hagy, but my brother, Bill. He is always there for me. He was a great double play partner in the field and an equally a great partner in our business. You know him as a high-energy, funny person, but there is no one more committed and sensitive to the needs of others than Bill.
You know, my love for the Orioles was born from my Dad. As a kid, I remember Dad putting on his work clothes, his uniform, and the sheer joy that would come over him as a result. Why did that make him so happy? Well, in his address to the minor leaguers on the first day of spring training, he would say, “Welcome to the greatest organization in baseball. If you make it through our system, you will play in the big leagues. It might not be with the Orioles, but you will be a big leaguer.”
Every day he would walk around saying, “It’s great to be young and an Oriole.”
Cal, Sr. was mine and Billy’s dad, but he also was a father figure to many others. Eddie, Jim, Brady, not you, Earl, sorry about that. You were Dad’s father figure and a father figure to many others as well. But as we now know Earl, Eddie was your favorite.
And the other father figures from this organization that I want us to remember: George Bamberger, [inaudible], Billy Hunter, [inaudible], Jimmy Williams, [inaudible], Bob Giordano, Dick [inaudible], [inaudible], [inaudible], Billy Miller and Doc Edwards, because I will remember them.
These ceremonies at times have been extremely emotional, drawing from the real experiences of success and failure. We celebrate success, and we also at least find out who we are in failure. These are the life lessons that play out on the baseball field. These are the life lessons learned from men like Earl, Cal, Sr., Frank, Eddie, Brooks, Jim and so many more who wore the Oriole uniform. This is the Oriole Way.
Thank you.

Loyalty in sports is something that has become more and more fleeting as the allure of big money deals tempts even the most faithful clubman to pastures $greener$.This Premier League season has seen some of the most loyal performers hang up their boots. Players who only ever donned the one jersey. Dedicated themselves to one club. Messrs Carragher, Scholes and Harper all took their final bow on their respective stages today. Stages where the fans will remember their allegiance and sing their songs and praises for years to come.

Here is five men who only kissed the one badge.

Ryan Giggs 941 appearances and counting

Giggs has been an ever present for United during the Premiership years. Since his debut in 1991, Giggsy has won it all with Red Devils. His record of 941 appearances is a mark that few can see being surpassed. The original United superstar of the nineties is coming up on his 40th birthday and is still making telling contributions to the game when called upon.

Tony Adams 717 appearances

Adams embodied Arsenal. The gunners captain even looked out of place is a suit. He was an Arsenal stalwart who marshalled the back four of Dixon, Winterburn and Bould to Premier League titles and FA Cups. His goal in a 4-0 drubbing of Everton at the end of their title winning 97/98 season, typified Mr. Arsenal. An arms open celebration to the adoration of the only fans he ever knew.

Paul Scholes 720 appearances

Scholesy the Ginger Ninja is one of the greatest midfielders the Premiership has ever seen. His passing and shooting was some of the best you’ll ever see. Just ask the man who many regard as the best midfielder of our generation,Zinedine Zidane. Zizou remarked that Paul Scholes was ‘the complete footballer’, and admitted that he regrets never having played alongside the evergreen Manchester United midfielder. Well Zidane would have had to have joined United to have done so thanks to Scholesy’s loyalty.

Jamie Carragher 737 appearances

Carragher wore his heart on his sleeve. The local boy who scored on his debut. Carra will go down as a true legend in the Anfield annals and his leadership and dedication to LFC will be something that may be impossible to replace. As fans saluted him for last game on Sunday against QPR, many will be hoping to see Mr. Liverpool back at the club in a coaching role sooner rather than later.

Steven Gerrard 630 and counting

Once in a generation a player comes along to whom nothing seems impossible. Gerrard has dragged Liverpool from the mire on more than one occasion. The trophy room at Anfield would be a lot let shimmering without his immense contributions over the years.Power, pace, touch and a never-say-die attitude, Stevie G has it all, and rarely have these attributes been more apparent than when he skippered the Reds to 2005 Champions League glory in Istanbul. He came close to leaving Liverpool during the Mourinho years at Chelsea but the man bleeds red and the boyhood kopite will not look right in another jersey. Also has the honor of captaining his national side.

So there you have it. A collection of the lads who stayed loyal in a world where you’re as only as loyal as your options. A dying breed in today’s game and something to be truly admired no matter where your allegiance lies.

Honorable mention; John Terry, Matt Le Tissier,Gary Neville and Ledley King.

In a perfect marketing move, Jay-Z immediately put other athletes on notice that being with Roc Nation definitely has its perks. Diggins graduated from the University of Notre Dame this weekend and Jay-Z saw it fitting that she she should be driving around in style as a graduate. The soon to be Tulsa Shock guard couldn’t have been more happy with the graduation experience, and we can’t blame her. Congrats to Skylar on the great life achievement.

Retired race car driver Richard “Dick” Trickle, 71, died today from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound according to Lincoln County deputies. According to the Charlotte Observer, Trickle called The Lincoln County Communications Center and said “there would be a dead body and it would be his.” Authorities found him dead next to his truck shortly thereafter.

Twitter lit up immediately with word of the death, and then the inevitable jokes in terrible taste appeared. We gathered a good portion of them, which was a very cringeworthy process. Congrats if you made this list, because you are a fairly terrible person.

David Beckham retired today after a long and illustrious career that saw him play with Man Utd, Real Madrid, LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and PSG. He played in three World Cups and was capped by his country 115 times in which he captained them 58 times. One could say that his honor collection is nothing short of outstanding. Another aspect of Beckham’s career however, was his wonderful locks. Yes, Becks hair has gone through an evolution quite unlike any celebrity I’ve seen. From Brylcream to braids, here’s a collection of his best (and worst) hairdos.

The childhood years saw a lot less high fashion and a lot more my mother is trying her hand at barbering style. Solid start from Becks though.

After the regular early 90′s wet curtains look, Becks kicked it up a notch to the bleached blonde boy band look. Posh had her paws on him at this stage so he must have been keeping up with the missus.

Next we have the sleek continental look. Often accessorized with an alice band and or sarong, this haircut also coincided with his Old Trafford exit. Fergie was obviously not a fan of alice bands.

Ahhhh yes. It was a natural progression to cornrows for the England captain right? Yes Becks rocked the cornrows and suddenly had an influx of RnB loving fans. I believed he called himself D-Becks during this phase if my sources are correct.

Some normality is restored with a nice clean buzzcut for David.

This World Cup look was dyed a bunch of colors also, and tons of product helped keep the spikes edgy as ever.

Hmm the speed-stripe mohican mullet extraordinaire was a favorite of mine. Kids on the streets of Ireland sported this look for far too long with everyone looking like cockatoo’s gone wrong. Cheers for that Becks.

Sultry Samurai David swooned the hearts of the Japanese followers even further with this warrior hairdo. Arigatō Mr. Beckham.

The “Johnny Rotten” look brought Becks back to his London routes with this anarchist barnet.

And finally Beckham signed off with a pompadour hairstyle with the odd V for Vendetta facial hair to make it a complete set of truly outstanding hairstyles from the lad.

Thanks for the memories David. Now as you grow old, I look forward to the George Clooney, Richard Gere and Bobby Charlton.

From the moment Rafa Benitez took over the reins at Chelsea, he was booed, jeered and heckled by fans because of his previous dealings with the club while manager of Liverpool. Add that to the fact that many fans felt that club legend and Champions League winner, Roberto Di Matteo didn’t get a fair crack of the whip, and you have the basis for a toxic environment for the former Liverpool boss. To an outsider looking in, Rafa’s task was one that didn’t seem like the trouble it was worth. An interim boss who knows he’s only a short term fix.

But in his 6 months as manager, the Spaniard has managed to navigate Chelsea’s daunting fixture list with league and FA cup semi-finals, World Club Final, and a Europa League trophy. He was also able to secure a Champions League spot in what was a hotly contested run in. One would think that this would get the respect from the Chelsea faithful. Not a chance.

One of the most impressive achievements of the Benitez era at Chelsea however, is the development of the previously erratic but undoubtedly talented David Luiz. Luiz has gone from an undeniably talented but highly erratic defender, to a consistent and reliable defender OR midfielder. Some may argue with captain qualities to boot.

Defence is something that is the benchmark of a Benitez side and
Chelsea players recognize what Rafa brings to the team. Benitez has given Chelsea a level of defensive steel and grit that was lacking when Terry was the anchor of it. He has had the courage of his convictions to drop and rotate seasoned players and has brought the best out of 50 million pound man Fernando Torres.

But, it is almost a certainty that Rafael Benitez will be shown the door at the end of the season to make way for the second coming of “The Special One.” Mourinho will undoubtedly bring the circus and fervor that the media will certainly court. I for one will be skeptical given that Chelsea are no longer the biggest checkbook at the party.Where Benitez goes from here is yet to be seen, but wherever he goes he can hold his head high and give himself a pat on the back for a job well done.

Be warned though that sequels rarely live up to the original.
