Chris Jericho is a legend in the ring and because of it, the star has had a target on his back for his entire career. Being a public figure isn’t always easy.

Jericho was spotted this past weekend in New York getting into a scuffle with people on the street. The star was in town for a tribute show for singer David Z.

The fan reportedly tried to congratulate Jericho for his past success but Jericho wasn’t in the mood for it. Even tossing out the phrase “f***ing p***y” when the shouting match dispersed.

Jericho spoke to TMZ and explained his side of the story:

“David Z was a good friend of mine and I was mentally and emotionally shattered after paying tribute to him and essentially saying goodbye to him Friday night.”

“I was not in a good state of mind at that time and instead of ignoring a pushy (aka rude) fan which is what I would usually do, I snapped. My apologies to all involved and God bless David Z.”

While it doesn’t excuse his actions, trying to interact with anyone after a memorial isn’t a recipe for success. Not that the fan would know. It seems more like a misunderstanding than anything else.

Regardless, Jericho should use that energy in the ring and not for causing a scene in New York.

Update: The original publication incorrectly stated that Jericho was still on hiatus.
