Four French hikers were in New Zealand last month to take in the sights and sounds of Lake Waikaremoana when one of the trail’s bridge’s suspension cables snapped on them while they were halfway across.

Three immediately hit the water 26 feet below. One hiker was able to grab onto the bridge to avoid a similar fate.

Thankfully, no one was seriously hurt.

The bridge was designed to hold the weight of ten people. According to The Telegraph, authorities have stated that the suspension cable that was supposed to keep people from plummeting to the ground suffered from “a rare manufacturing defect.”
