MLB: Toronto Blue Jays at Tampa Bay Rays

Colin Cowherd’s on-air comments about Dominicans rubbed Jose Bautista the wrong way, and understandably so.

Cowherd, who recently announced he’ll soon be moving from ESPN to FOX, was discussing the Miami Marlins’ decision to hire Dan Jennings as manager when he chose to make this perplexing statement to back up his point.

“I mean the Marlins put a general manager in their dugout. People freaked out,” Cowherd said. “Oh, it’s baseball! You don’t think a general manager can manage? Like, it’s impossible? The game is too complex? Like, I’ve never bought into that ‘Baseball is just too complex.’ Really? A third of the sport is from the Dominican Republic.”

Cowherd tried backtracking and explaining what he meant, but to no avail.

This strange jab at the Dominican community, combined with his lack of effort to explain his comments, prompted Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista to take a shot at Cowherd on Twitter.

It’s pretty easy to understand why Bautista’s upset, as Cowherd’s words are especially insulting to Dominican players like him.

Cowherd has a knack for saying controversial things on his radio show “The Herd,” but this time he might’ve gone a step too far. It should be interesting to see if he apologizes or attempts to clarify and sugarcoat his statement even more in the coming days.
