The Carolina Hurricanes’ terrible, horrible, no good, very bad preseason took another big hit (literally) on Sunday afternoon when young star Jeff Skinner was knocked out after taking an elbow to the head from Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen.

Skinner took the hit straight to the jaw, spinning him around and sending him crashing to ice, where he laid motionless for a moment. Despite the high hit, there was no penalty called on the play. Skinner was clearly dazed as he headed to the locker room and was immediately ruled out for the remainder of the game with an “upper body injury.”

The ‘Canes have already lost a top-six forward in Jordan Staal, who broke his leg earlier this preseason, and Skinner has already dealt with a couple of concussions over the past few years so hopefully the damage from this latest incident is limited.

Update: Not all that surprisingly, the Hurricanes announced Monday that Skinner suffered another concussion.
