foxsports-moments-BARTMAN-v1-2

The MLB postseason is upon us (of which the Division Series will be shown on FOX Sports 1) and we’re taking a look back at some of the most memorable moments that the MLB playoffs have ever produced.

And while most notable plays involve players, the Steve Bartman incident is one of the rare cases where a fan became the center of a sports story.

It was the eighth inning of Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS at Wrigley Field and the Cubs were in control of the series. And yet, when a foul ball Steve Bartman’s way with the Cubs enjoying a 3-0 lead, Bartman reacted how nearly every single fan would in that situation – he reached for the ball and ended up possibly interfering with Moises Alou’s catch attempt.

The merciless reaction from the crowd and the constant televising of Bartman’s face became national news after the Cubs ended up losing the game by a score of 8-3. The Bartman incident became a moment which not only compounded the image of the Cubs as a perpetually-cursed franchise, it was a moment which forever changed one man’s life through (nearly) no fault of his own.

In related news, it’s been 106 years since the Cubs won a national championship.
