If you’ve ever watched a CFL game, one of the first differences you’ll notice between Canadian football and American football is the placement of the goalposts. In American football, they’re located in the back of the endzone, out of play. In Canadian football, they’re placed at the very beginning of the endzone, right smack in the middle of play.

A big metal structure being placed in the middle of a field where there are grown men running around at full speed seems like a pretty dangerous stupid idea, and we were reminded of that this weekend when University of Regina receiver Mitch Thompson ran straight into the goalpost on a long pass during the first quarter of the Rams’ game against the University of Manitoba.

While attempting to chase down the pass, Thompson failed to locate and avoid the goalpost. The resulting collision left the wideout visibly shaken for a few minutes before he was escorted off the field under his own power.

There’s padding around the base of the posts, but it’s only a matter of time before someone actually winds up seriously hurt because of this. Stop trying to be different and just put the damn things in the back of the endzone already.
