UCLA won the coin toss for their game on Saturday against Texas and elected to defer to the second half, thus giving the Longhorns the decision to kick or receive to open the game.
The object of the game of football is to score more points than your opponent. In order to do so, you want to have as many offensive possessions as possible. Texas appears to be confused on that simple concept, as they elected to kick to start the game, meaning UCLA would be allowed to receive the second half kickoff as well, essentially giving them a free possession in a massive game for both teams. The odd decision was reported on Saturday but video of the referee-player exchange had not surfaced yet. This video shows the referee explaining to Texas that they will not be able to receive either the first half or second half kickoff if they elect to kick.
The Longhorns lost the game by three points. Only if they had one more possession to kick a game-tying field goal or drive for a game-winning touchdown…
