With the bases loaded and the game on the line in the 12th inning, the Los Angeles Dodgers employed a bizarre infield wall against the Padres’ Seth Smith. Three infielders – shortstop Miguel Rojas, second baseman Dee Gordon and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez – and right fielder Andre Ethier all lined up on the fringe of the infield grass on the right side to protect against the pull-hitting lefty at the plate.

It’s something I’ve never seen before, but it worked – Smith pulled a ground ball to Gordon, who got the fielder’s choice at home. Unfortunately for the Dodgers – who went back to a traditional infield shift after the putout – the very next batter, Yasmani Grandal, managed to single home the game-winning run.
