This is a pretty bizarre highlight from Tuesday night’s Indians-Reds game in Cleveland. During a seventh inning rally, Cleveland’s Yan Gomes smacked a ball into right field for an RBI double. While Jay Bruce was fielding the ball in right, a pitcher warming up in Cincinnati’s bullpen unleashed a wild throw that soared over the catcher’s head and into the field of play.

As the Indians’ David Murphy rounded third, he spotted the extra (dead) ball lying in the grass and confused it with the live ball, leading him to break for home. As soon as Murphy realized what had happened, it was too late – he was stuck nearly halfway down the line and the live ball was tossed to third for the easy tag-out, the first out of the inning.

As you can imagine, Murphy and Indians’ manager Terry Francona were not very pleased by the sequence. Honestly, it’s hard to blame them…that’s a pretty crappy way to lose an out in the middle of a rally.
