On Sunday, as the NBA Draft is nearing closer and closer, former Baylor star and NBA prospect Isaiah Austin delivered some terrible news.

He would be unable to have a career in the NBA due to a rare genetic disorder.

Austin was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a disorder which affects a person’s connective tissue. It can affect many parts of the body, including the heart, bones, joints and blood vessels. In some cases, it can be life-threatening.

While it would be understandable for him to be devastated with the news, considering he’s worked his entire life to reach the NBA Draft only to have that moment taken away from him by something beyond his control, Isaiah has responded wonderfully to the adversity.

He posted this to his instagram:

“This game. It is a platform for anyone and everyone who comes in contact with it. I was blessed enough to play it on one of the highest levels despite the odds that were stacked against me. Blessed is all I can say. Thankful is all I can be. The love from you all is greatly appreciated! I know God has a plan! If I can say one to to anyone, it would be please, please do not take the privilege of playing sports or anything for granted. #NewBeginningsFollow”

Isaiah also sat down with Holly Rowe of ESPN for an interview to talk about how Isaiah learned the news. The interview is heartbreaking and inspirational at the same time.

Now that is how one should deal with adversity.
