We had noted how the Super Bowl was pretty much the only thing keeping Roman Numerals relevant in modern times. However, it seems that the greatest proponent of using letters as numbers will put that practice to rest for one Super Bowl.

The NFL has released the logo for Super Bowl 50, which will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2016, and the logo uses the Arabic numeral 50, rather than the Roman numeral L.

It is hard to deny that “Super Bowl 50” will look better on a t-shirt than “Super Bowl L”, mainly because one can’t help but think of “Super Bowl L” as “Super Bowl Loser”.

For those who love Roman Numerals, (or are a stickler for tradition) have no fear. Starting with the fifty-first Super Bowl, the NFL will go back to its traditional numbering system.
