The origin and purpose behind Twitter death hoaxes are always a little confusing so we won’t even really attempt to figure out where this one came from, but it might be the most entertaining one to date. It appears that social media’s newest victim is Jared Fogle, the Subway weight loss spokesman.
On Monday morning, the hashtag #RIPSubwayJared showed up on my timeline and, understandably, I was a bit caught off guard. A few Google searches returned no legitimate results for a story on Fogle’s death, so I clicked the hashtag to see what it was all about.
It seems like some people got bored on a Monday morning and get #RIPSubwayJared trending, fake killing the guy just so they could entertain themselves with some fat jokes.
