Former NFL QB and current NFL Network analyst Kurt Warner became the latest in a line of former pros with criticism of Carolina Panther’s pick (and #1 overall) Cam Newton.

Kurt’s thoughts:

“I think he’s the most dynamic player in this draft, but as far as being the most effective pro, I don’t think so. I don’t see it,” Warner said. “I think he has too much work to do. Maybe it’s the pick they had to make, but I don’t know if it was the right pick for the Panthers.”

“I don’t think he’s a franchise quarterback, definitely not at this time,” Warner said. “It has yet to be seen whether he will get there, but I think it will be very, very difficult.”

I’ve generally respected Kurt Warner as a decent level-headed man. But dismissing a young man just starting his career is a complete antithesis of the man. Having gone through what he did, Kurt would be the man to encourage a young player right from the start. This kind of thing should be left to the Trumps of this world.

      Excellent post. Well said.

I think Cam Newton will be another JaMarcus Russell.
    Time will tell.

Kurt Warner’s opinion is his. It is one person’s opinion that is negative and merits
    no further attention from me.

Personally, I feel that Cam Newton’s potential is excellent. He has as many skills as
most and a lot more than the others. He led a team to a undefeated season and a
national championship even with the mongers out in full force.

Question? Cam’s earlier(he was no more than 20 and probably a teen) problems
were miniscule and the money thing was attributed to a overbearing or
over zealous father. I have heard of and seen recruits who parents
were just wrong in their dealings with recruiters and administrations.
Is a son, at any age, supposed to divorce his father. His father is
    probably his most avid supporter.

Cam is a mentally and physically gifted man and should do an excellent job in the
NFL as he did at the level below.

I think for any NFL QB or former NFL QB to make such a statement is just dumb. Warner should have stop and ask himself” what did it take for me to be successful in the NFL” And if he answered truthfully he would say it took the help of my team mates. With that said, is Warner saying Cams Carolina team mates are not going to play with him? Comment like that from people who played a position where others players work to protect him is just plain dumb.

  • I believe that Kurt is right on the money too many unanswered questions. 1 good college year don’t make you the next big thing. Should have stayed in college a couple more years to mature and get his bearings and a degree to fall back on if the football thing goes bust on him.

    • aj

EVERY draft pick has unanswered questions since none have previous NFL experience. There have been busts who stayed in college 4 years. And night school is always available to get a degree. But in all honesty most folks BY FAR get degrees to be able to make big money- not for altruistic reasons. So, it makes no sense to stay in school now and bypass this HUGE contract with guaranteed signing bonus that comes with the number one pick. jCam has carried himself well under scrutiny and intense pressure so he has already shown himself to be intelligent enough to not blow away his money and to hire a credible agent and money managers to make sure he makes prudent investments to sustain him and his extended family after football. Warner just made an asinine statement based on absolutely no intimate knowledge of this young man. Perhaps Warner is jealous that he wasn’t accepted early on as a credible franchise QB??

Everyone needs to be given a chance and be encourage. The person has to prove his or her ability to compete to the next level and should not be judge until their out there working their goal. Kurt you should know more than anyone out their. The NFL teams they know what they are doing.

Get over it Cam-Lovers. Warner is a PAID analyst who is paid to analyze! He’s not there to “encourage” or “love-fest” or anything else. Warner gave HIS OPINION and remember that Warner paid his dues & worked his tail off to get his NFL shot. Newton will have his chance to prove himself on the field, but the love-fest honeymoon will be over the moment he steps on an NFL field where he is a dime-a-dozen.

Kurt I believe is right on. Cam has no substance as a potential professional, so he has many years to learn and build Cam had to lie, cheat, and steal to get his place at Auburn. Auburn fell for the whole deal and allowed him to play, when the other football programs including SEC programs sat their players under NCAA investigation. Cam has also let his mouth do too much talking given his past, which again shows no substance.

    • Iverson

NO SUBSTANCE? I guess the Heisman voters saw no substance either. I guess the 50 touchdowns had no substance either. I guess rolling over Nick Saban for an SEC championship had no substance either. Definitely no substance in winning the NATIONAL championship. Please. Kurt Warner has a chip on his shoulder for any QB in the draft spotlight as we all know his history of not being a high pick.

      • Pops

Cam is a running QB and will do ok in that category just as dog killer Vick has done but running QBs never win championships. How many throwing TDs did he have in college. Kurt did not badmouth Newton he just said he has a long way to go and will not be a franchise QB. I tend to agree with him and Kurt has nothing to prove he was one of the greatest QBs of all time.

  • Mr izz O

Well, the 49ers paid alex smith 49 million for breaking some records in the WAC. We’ve seen how that turned out.

Now let’s see how a heisman winning QB out of the SEC does (no disrespect Tebow) that can actually pass the ball.

TOTALLY UNDERSTANDABLE TO HEAR NEGATIVITY FROM SOME “FANS” REGARDING ANYTHING TO DO WITH CAM. BUT TO HEAR KURT WARNER SAY SOMETHING SO NEGATIVE ABOUT A YOUNG ATHELETE JUST ABOUT TO START HIS NFL CAREER AS A QUARTERBACK REALLY SPEAKS TO KURTS TRUE CHARACTER. HE COULD HAVE SAID SOMETHING A LITTLE MORE ENCOURAGING OR AT LEAST HAVE TAKENT THE HIGH ROAD WITH HIS “PERSONAL OPINION”. GUESS CAM WILL HAVE TO GO THE ROAD OF JORDAN AND OTHER’S WHO WERE TOLD THAT THEY WEREN’T GOOD ENOUGH. GO, GO, GO CAM, LIKE THE 1ST PLACE MIAMI HEAT!!! LET THE HATERS BE YOUR INSPIRATION!

  • Champ

This guy went from the NFL to arena football to bagging groceries to the Super Bowl. Somewhere along that journey, someone took a chance on him. Quite arrogant of him to be critical of Carolina for taking a chance on a Hiesman/Nat’l Championship winner. Cleanup on aisle 4!
