Verizon Throws Last Minute Curveball and Makes New iPhone Customers Slow Down

Starting today, Verizon will begin throttling customers’ data speeds if you’re in the top 5% of its users. Perfectly timed for today’s launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon, the company announced two new network management practices (outlined in a memo here): slowing the data transfer speeds of customers consuming lots of data and implementing “optimization and transcoding technologies” so their network can operate more efficiently. The last practice¬†will cache less data, use less capacity, and resize video according to the device. Verizon claims this won’t impact the quality of the video, text, and images on your phone; however, they do say that the “process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device.” Well which is it Verizon?
