Starting today, Verizon will begin throttling customers’ data speeds if you’re in the top 5% of its users. Perfectly timed for today’s launch of the iPhone 4 on Verizon, the company announced two new network management practices (outlined in a memo here): slowing the data transfer speeds of customers consuming lots of data and implementing “optimization and transcoding technologies” so their network can operate more efficiently. The last practice will cache less data, use less capacity, and resize video according to the device. Verizon claims this won’t impact the quality of the video, text, and images on your phone; however, they do say that the “process may minimally impact the appearance of the file as displayed on your device.” Well which is it Verizon?
